We did it! First Step Designs won the 2024 Build It Award for best staircase build in the UK!
Winning the Build It Award for best staircase of 2024 is the cherry on top of what was already a record-breaking year for us at First Step Designs, and we're so incredibly grateful to every single member of our team who made this possible. We're not a huge team and recognition of this calibre really is a testament to the tireless work and dedication that each of us puts into every build.
The Build It Awards are a big deal to us in the industry. It brings architects, manufacturers, industry experts, and key figures together to recognise extraordinary efforts and innovation in the custom and self-build home sector, and we are incredibly proud to win this award.

The DNA of an award-winning staircase
Our award-winning entry was an open-plan, central spine staircase set against a feature wall with a large concrete step at the base. The concrete base acts as an art installation, creating a dramatic visual impact from all angles. The staircase's open structure and see-through curved oak handrail fit in with the rest of the home’s aesthetic, creating a unified and cohesive look throughout.
Other design features include:
- Custom laser-cut central spine structure with no visible welds, powder coated to a super matte Anthracite grey finish.
- 112mm European white oak treads finished with anti-slip lacquer.
- Solid bar spindles machined to sit 100mm deep within the structure for chemical fixing.
- Elegant curved feature handrail as an opening detail to the staircase.
- Micro concrete full feature tread to act as an art gallery.
Reflecting on 2024 and looking to 2025
We’re dead serious when we say that the last year and a half has been a whirlwind at First Step Designs. We were featured on the UK’s flagship home and lifestyle TV show, Grand Designs; we renovated Eddie Hall's staircase, personally witnessing the world's strongest man rip out old balustrades with his bare hands; and now we’ve won the biggest and most prestigious award in our industry.
We hope to continue carrying this momentum forward into 2025 after a very well-deserved break over the holidays. We look forward to seeing what our expert design, fabrication, and installation teams manage to achieve next year as we continue to innovate and push our own boundaries to deliver the UK’s finest bespoke stairs.
