Project Overview
"Glass would have been nice... but everybody has glass nowadays"
At First Step Designs, glass is at the heart of 80% of our bespoke staircase projects. We've been advocating for the 'spindle revolution' for a while now, and the O'Brien family entrusted us with the chance to craft something extraordinary for their renovation. The result is a steel-framed staircase featuring custom timber details that now serves as the centerpiece of their entire home.

Creating a timber structure without the need for intrusive support work.
Incorporating a timber structure into a metal staircase presents the challenge of reinforcing the timber without resorting to unsightly supports. To address this, we integrated a slimline steel structure that also serves as a handrail, capping all timber spindles to harmonize with the primary steel framework.

The Challenge
An open void bridge is frequently overlooked for its untapped potential.
While many homes have a bridge link connecting different parts of the property designed to blend in, The Coach House took a different approach. We turned it into a true focal point by covering it with powder-coated steel, painting the ceiling section, and encasing the timber spindles underneath, creating a consistent pattern and design flow. A real talking point for the property.
