Project Overview
The Brackens build featured a unique challenge that took the combined efforts of First Step Designs, the architect, and skilled plasterers to overcome. This beautiful, full window-spanning cut string oak staircase features white stringers and risers paired with stone-grey-stained oak treads. Black steel spindles and a black-stained helical oval handrail serve as its balustrades.

FEATURE
Continuous feature balustrade
The Brackens build presented a unique challenge: the staircase had to bridge across a wide window of approximately 4m without the aid of a support wall or struts, allowing enough headspace on either side for easy access through the glass doors leading to the garden.

The Challenge
We collaborated closely with the architect to design and fabricate a hidden steel substructure that spans the gap without sacrificing stability or footprint position. This substructure seamlessly integrates with the first-floor construction and is chemically anchored to the structural wall on the ground floor, achieving a precise cranked steel detail. To enhance the aesthetic, we worked with a skilled plasterer to create a seamless finish where the stairs overlap the steelwork, making it an intentional design feature.
The team at First Step Designs is thrilled with the result and excited for the next big challenge!
